    Richgro Site Visit

As a WA fourth generation family owned business that has been manufacturing premium garden products since 1916, Richgro is now one of the top garden products suppliers in Australia. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the supply chain strategy and operation of a business that supplies product throughout Australia from their Jandakot operation and with collaborative supply chain partners in other States. Seasonality in demand is an important factor & the product range runs from high volume low value products such as soils to low volume higher value products such as chemical formulations for fertilising and pest control. Flexibility in production capacity is key to the success of the business.

We will discover how the supply chain team at Richgro navigated the disruptions of Covid 19 & what, if any permanent changes it has led to in the way the supply chain is structured and managed.

Operating out of the Jandakot site there are extensive automated bagging and packing facilities for the manufacture of fertilisers and landscape materials (potting mixes, composts and mulches), along with warehousing facilities from where operations in all other Australian states are serviced.  Many of the raw materials consumed during the manufacturing processes are by-products of other external production and hence waste material reuse is a key feature of this business – the circular economy.

Along with the core fertiliser and landscape materials business, Richgro operates a state-of-the-art Anaerobic Digestion Plant, which turns large volumes of food and beverage waste into methane gas. This methane gas in turn creates electricity which is used to power the entire Richgro site and also returns excess energy to the grid – positive environmental impact preventing landfill and it represents a renewable energy source.

Freight management is a major cost to the business and we will hear about a recent initiative using a specialist consulting company resulting in improved efficiency / lower costs per tonne mile for freight.

The site tour will be conducted by Richgro management, followed by time for questions and general discussion about the business and in-particular the various supply chain processes and issues.
